John Fahey (February 28, 1939–February 22, 2001) combined folk, blues, Indian raga, 20th century composition styles, and classical into a musical gestalt he called "American Primitive," bringing back the solo guitar as an emotive instrument in the process. Widely heralded as one of the greatest fingerstyle guitarists of all time, it is rare to find a solo acoustic guitarist worth his salt that does not cite Fahey as an influence. A very diverse array of bands, including Slint, Cul de Sac (with whom he has also collaborated on a 1997 record), Sonic Youth, and the avant-garde musician Jim O'Rourke also acknowledge his influence.
Red Cross is John Fahey's last album. Recorded a few months before the guitarist's death, it is a tantalizing taste of where he was musically in those final days. If there was one thing about Fahey's recordings that made them distinctive, it was their unpredictability. Fahey was an American original, a crucial figure in expanding the boundaries of the acoustic guitar over the last few decades of the 20th century. On this recording there are expansive and decidedly nontraditional interpretations of such standards as Irving Berlin's "Remember" and George & Ira Gershwin's "Summertime". But there are also a couple of electric guitar musings that are equally haunting and full of intrigue. The final listed track (there's a hidden track so buried most folks may never find it) is called "Untitled with Rain", a mysterious tone poem of sorts that ebbs and flows with an eccentric, psychedelic throb. A final, sparkling gem from a true American original.
The LP package has inside a wonderfully warm glimpse of Fahey's last days by Cul de Sac member and former collaborator Glenn Jones: a 16 pp. booklet insert (15cm x 21cm) resembling an old Christian pamphlet.

This vinyl album was originally released (first edition) in packaging that was close in feel to that of the CD (that was included in a special letterpressed chipboard jacket), and then (second edition) in a numbered limited edition of 1000 LPs housed in a fold-out plastic sleeve.
