JOHN MARTYN - The Tumbler ORIG Island LP Stereo/ ILPS 9091 (UK, 1968)
Happy to present John’s 2nd UK LP backed by Harold McNair, Paul Wheeler and Dave Moses. Like ‘London Conversation’ this is a really hard LP to find in its original Pink press but I can bring it to you here in a nice condition.
The fully-laminated single sleeve is not as strong as the vinyl but is intact and generally pleasing with the following imperfections: 5 quite heavy thumb creases to the front and 3 to the rear, slight ring impression both front and rear, 3 thin margins of laminate lift (2 front/1 back), 3 small patches of paper loss to the bottom of the back, corner crease to the front bottom right and some wear and paper loss to the same corner. Also the sleeve does not quite sit flat due to some ‘rippling’ - slight on the front, more pronounced on the rear. All in all I have outlined every single defect, but it’s still presentable and grades VG- (Very Good Minus). The spine is perfectly intact, there’s no edge wear to speak of and the opening edges are still pretty sharp.
The textured pink labels are fine with mild to moderate spindle marking but no writing, residue, stickers or foxing.
The heavyweight vinyl is much better with only a handful of very light scuffs, a few hairlines and 2 or 3 small surface scratches to report. There’s no heavy marking at all and it still looks great. Visually it’s harsh to not go EX- but I think VG+ (Very Good Plus) is truer. HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and is a fine player with no hiss, clicks or loss of clarity but just a little discernible surface noise between tracks and in quieter sections (hardly noticeable) and 2 ticks to S1/T4, and a tick and 1 pop to S2/T5, but nothing really to impair the overall enjoyment of this 41 year old disc. John left a lasting legacy which will continue to endure. Here is a rare part of it. Low start no reserve!
