Another from my personal collection of over 50,000 UK albums that I have collected over a period of more than 45 years or more. Here is an original 1st UK pressing of "Back To The Roots' by John Mayall and complete with E.Day Gatefold Cover and Large Booklet! Originally purchased from new in 1971 and initially only ever played one time to record to tape and then stored in a case with the vinyls separated from the sleeves and cover for protection. This is how I have always stored my records! Amazingly barely a spider mark can be seen on all four sides of the labels, very very rare to find like this after 44years! I have recorded all four sides at very loud volume for you to hear in the player provided below. The audio is astounding through out! Probably the best that you could ever find! These thick and chunky slabs of vinyls sounds as good as it did when purchased from new in my opinion. A real bass feel and awesome separation only found like this on the earliest pressings in my opinion. The audio is graded Near Mint through out, an audiophiles final upgrade copy in my opinion. This is complete with the original 1st issue fully textured E.J.Day& co gate fold cover and rare with the original booklet! So rare to find complete and in this absolutely top condition! Don't underestimate the rarety of this awesome album in this condition, over 44 years old like this!

Back to the Roots is a 1971 double album by John Mayall released on Polydor. Recording sessions took place both in California and London where Mayall invited some former members of his band, notably guitarists Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor.





At the end of the 1980s Mayall remixed some tracks and issued them along with some of the older material as Archive to the Eighties. An expanded two-CD version of Back to the Roots now includes both the original and later remixed versions of the tracks.




Besides Mayall, who sang and played piano and guitar, the musicians who recorded the original tracks were:


Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Harvey Mandel and Jerry McGee on guitars;
Larry Taylor and Steven Thompson on bass;
Keef Hartley and Paul Lagos on drums;
Johnny Almond on saxophone and flute.




John Mayall, OBE (born 29 November 1933) is an English blues singer, guitarist, organist and songwriter, whose musical career spans over fifty years. In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has included some of the most famous blues and blues rock musicians.





They include Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Aynsley Dunbar, Hughie Flint, Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Andy Fraser, Johnny Almond, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya and Buddy Whittington.




Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1933, Mayall's father was Murray Mayall, a guitarist and jazz music enthusiast. From an early age, John was drawn to the sounds of American blues players such as Lead Belly, Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith, and Eddie Lang, and taught himself to play the piano, guitars, and harmonica.

The Booklet



Mayall spent three years in Korea for national service and, during a period of leave, he bought his first electric guitar. Back in England, he enrolled at Manchester College of Art (now part of Manchester Metropolitan University) and started playing with semi-professional bands.





After graduation, he obtained a job as an art designer but continued to play with local musicians. In 1963, he opted for a full-time musical career and moved to London. His previous craft would be put to good use in the designing of covers for many of his coming albums.







Since the end of the 1960s Mayall has lived in the US. A brush fire destroyed his house in Laurel Canyon in 1979, seriously damaging his musical collections and archives.







Mayall has been married twice, and has six grandchildren. His second wife, Maggie Mayall is an American blues performer, and since the early 1980s took part in the management of her husband's career. The pair divorced in 2011.







In 2005 Mayall was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Honours List.

The Vinyls
These are the original thicker heavier and chunky slab of vinyls only found like this on the earliest pressings! Both vinyls lay perfectly flat on the turntable and are free of any warping. On initial inspection of all four sides I find it hard to even see a blemish on the play surfaces. These look like new vinyls in my opinion. Any marks that could possibly be seen in strong light would be sleeve removal only but I struggle to see any at all! Incredibly rare for 44 years old like this!

The labels
These are the original Polydor delux labels! Again these look like new and I struggle to even see a spider trace on the labels! There is little if no spindle wear the hole is perfectly round! The vinyls have only ever been played a couple of times by me only and I can not recall ever playing this any more!

The Audio Quality
There isn't much to say about the audio other than this plays like a new copy would in my opinion. Clear ,loud clean and sharp audio through out! Absolutely beautiful separation and a deep bass feel only found like this on the earliest pressings! There are no loud constant clicks ticks or pops. Even in between tracks it is very quiet! It is important to note that this has only ever been played two times by me only since I purchased the album over 44 years ago. The records were always stored separate from the cover and sleeves for preotection, this is how I have always stored my records. The audio is graded at least excellent plus to near as Mint through out! Never need to upgrade in my opinion!

Please note! I always add this disclamer! Please allow for isolated static tick or light pop not consistent through out the audio! Please remember that this is an original 44 year old record that would have originally been played on a 44 year old system!
 These vinyls have been stored in a case and laying dormant for over 40 years. A build up of dirt and dust in the grooves causes static ticks/crackle. A constant clean is recommended before each play. This will reduce any static and enhace the audio quality!

The Booklet
This is the original 1st issue large booklet often seen missing from this album! All pages are present very minor crease at the front top right corner to mention other than that this is complete and lovely.

The Record Sleeves
These are the plain white poly sleeves becoming fragile with age light general creasing/staining wear. No edge splits or tears. The vinyls are now always stored separate from the sleeves and cover!

The cover
This is the original 1st UK issue gate fold cover printed by E.J.Day & co Ltd. Fully Rough textured (only 1st press) Rarely seen in decent condition , these normally suffer from bad rubbing wear. This is lovely and straight, no real creases to mention. Any rubbing at the edges you have to look for to notice. Importantly all text can be read. No edge splits or tears! Graded at least excellent to excellent plus in my opinion! Try to find a better 1st issue cover like this one.
