JOHN MAYALL “Plays John Mayall” TOP! 1965 UK Decca Records Mono Unboxed M-
1965/UK/Decca Records LK-4680…..here’s a gorgeous original pressing of this rare UK only release. The thin fragile laminated cover is in beautiful strong VG++ condition, the corners are just very slightly dinged, light crease bottom right corner, a couple of light creases bottom left corner on back, light thin soiling ring top and bottom on white back, the front is glossy and clean and shows little shelf wear, slight laminate lifting along left edge, the white back is white with no obvious aging, splits, writing or other issues. The vinyl is in glossy clean strong VG++ to M- condition. Side one has one very light inaudible whispy hairline scuff on the side. Side two is M- and has a new appearance. The record looks and plays clean as new on both sides with clean crisp fidelity. The labels are clean with no spindle marks. Includes the original inner sleeve which is clean and has no splits. A gorgeous copy of this great lp! Nicest copy I've seen in many years! No need to upgrade! Please check my auctions for other rock, psych, garage and blues lp’s. Good luck and thanks for looking!
John Mayall's debut album, recorded live in December 1964, is a little unjustly overlooked, as it was recorded shortly before the first of the famous guitarists schooled in the Bluesbreakers (Eric Clapton) joined the band. With Roger Dean on guitar (and the rhythm section who'd play on the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album, bassist John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint), it has more of a rock/R&B feel, rather like the early Rolling Stones, than the purer bluesier material Mayall would usually stick to in his subsequent recordings. The record doesn't suffer for this, however, moving along quite powerfully, and -- unusually for a British R&B/blues band of the time -- featuring almost nothing but original material, all penned by Mayall. Nigel Stanger's saxophone adds interesting touches to a few tracks, the songs are quite good, and while Dean's guitar and Mayall's vocals aren't on the same level as the best instrumentalists and singers in the British blues-rock movement, they're more than satisfactory.
