Following 2024's Passage Du Desir, the new Johnny Blue Skies and Dark clouds album Mutiny After Midnight finds Sturgill Simpson's alter ego leaning into a loose, band-driven approach where songs were written and captured in the moment at Easy Eye Sound Studios. The aim, as Blue Skies puts it, was simple: make a dance record. Tracks such as 'Make America Fuk Again' pair sharp, self-aware lyrics with groove-led arrangements that cut through the gloom of modern life. Produced by Blue Skies with an inquisitive spirit, the record carries humour, defiance and a welcome sense of release from all the socio-political heaviness that surrounds us.
