About This Release:
Up for auction is an exceptionally scarce 1952 pressing of "Bye Bye Baby Blues" by Johnny Giles and the Jive Five on the highly obscure Movieland Record Co. of Hollywood imprint. Featuring a featured vocal performance by Jimmy Valentine, this historical West Coast indie piece is a phenomenal snapshot of early 1950s Los Angeles rhythm and blues. Due to the short-lived nature of the boutique Movieland label, documentation and surviving copies of this particular catalog number are few and far between.  The exceptional scarcity of this 78 RPM record stems from its production on Movieland Records, a tiny, short-lived independent label that operated out of Los Angeles in the early 1950s. Like many post-war boutique labels catering to the local "Central Avenue" scene, Movieland pressed very small, regional batches of only a few hundred copies. These micro-pressings were distributed almost exclusively to Southern California jukebox operators and regional radio DJs rather than commercial retail shelves. Furthermore, its late 1952 release coincided with the music industry's aggressive technological shift from fragile shellac 78s to the more durable 7-inch 45 RPM vinyl format. Because the few surviving promo copies that surface today are almost entirely 45 RPM red-wax variations, finding a commercial 78 RPM shellac copy that has escaped decades of attrition, breakage, and discard is an absolute anomaly for collectors. Condition Notes for Buyers:
  • Overall Grade: VG+ to Excellent (EX)
  • Label: The distinct deep pink/red Movieland label is clean and sharp with clearly defined silver text. Shows only minimal superficial storage wear and light spindle marks around the center hole.
  • Vinyl/Shellac: The shellac disc displays a deep, healthy original gloss. Visual inspection under strong light reveals an exceptionally clean playing surface with only a few minor paper scuffs or faint hairlines that do not impede audio playback.

Delivery time is usually one to two weeks, depending on foreign customs, and each destination. Registered mail is required for any interantional shipments with a value over $100 for buyer and seller protection on Ebay and Paypal. Registered mail costs an additional $12.00 above normal shipping costs.  Packages with four or more records sent to international destinations require Priority Mail due to the weight of the package. USPS charges by weight. Any package over two pounds goes to $34.50, over three pounds to $49.50, and over four pounds to higher rates.

 First class international mail service can not track the item after it leaves the United States.  International customers who want insurance and/or tracking must use either registered or global express mail service. (These services are not available with first class postal international mail service.) Registered mail takes a week longer, due to security handling.
