NOTHIN BUT THE BLUES - Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas in the 1940s and surrounded by the blues, country, and Cajun music, Johnny Winter and his younger brother Edgar began their careers as kids, performing songs together and winning talent shows and spots on local TV. Before they were even teens, the two brothers traveled to New York to explore their options, and gained exposure to the rock 'n' roll and rhythm & blues of the period which also influenced them profoundly.

During their early teens, the Winter brothers released their first singles, "School Day Blues" and "You Know I Love You" back in Beaumont. By the late '60s, Johnny and Edgar had each forged independent musical identities and developed unique followings, though they continued to collaborate occasionally, releasing albums such as "Together: Edgar Winter and Johnny Winter Live" (1975),

One of the most significant aspects of both men's work, however, was the fact that it revealed a deep respect for the African-American blues tradition, incorporating many of its elements, despite significant racial barriers that existed at the time. Also, rather than trying to downplay their unusual looks, the Winter brothers embraced them, using them to fuel their flashy rock-star image.

The Winter brothers each managed to reach a high level of commercial success around the world, releasing several very popular solo albums and playing sold-out concerts. Johnny received multiple Grammy Award nominations for his work, and Edgar became a pioneer of electronic rock, one of the very first musicians to use the synthesizer as a lead instrument in studio recordings and in live performances. The careers of both brothers have spanned almost five decades.

This album came out in 1977, the same year as Muddy Waters' excellent comeback-album "Hard Again", which Johnny Winter produced and played on. And here on NOTHIN’ BUT THE BLUES, Winter fronts the mighty Muddy Waters band, leading them through a very well-arranged set of his own compositions, and a powerful rendition of Muddy's "Walkin' Thru The Park".

Johnny Winter handles the lead vocals himself (except on "Walkin' Thru The Park"), and his throaty vocals suit these purposely traditional blues compositions pretty well. Winter plays guitar as well, of course, and a little bit of bass and drums, and his acoustic steel guitar playing is particularly delightful.

Highlights include...well, almost every song, actually. The acoustic slide guitar workout "TV Mama" (not the Big Joe Turner song) is sublime, as is the swaggering, harp-driven "Tired Of Tryin'", the thumping, groovy "Bladie May", and the fine "Sweet Love And Evil Women", a showcase for "Steady Rollin'" Bob Margolin, whose shimmering lead guitar lines wind their way all around Winter's gruff, throaty vocals.

Johnny Winter fans seem to be somewhat divided...some prefer his bluesier albums, while others go for his rock n' roll records. This is definitely one for the blues crowd, a really fine collection of original songs, and one of Johnny Winter's best albums. Highly recommended.

MUDDY WATERS WITH JOHNNY WINTER HARD AGAIN - It's seems strange now to think of Muddy Waters having to make a "comeback," but that's what the 1977 HARD AGAIN came down to. The great blues man's first post-Chess recording after 30 years with that company, it marked Waters major-label debut and eventually went gold. The over-60 Waters lived up to all the attention with one of his most energetic, sustained performances, bettering his original version of "Mannish Boy," pushing "Bus Driver" to a raging peak, and generally sounding like the wisest man on record.

Harp player James Cotton and producer-guitarist Johnny Winter are among the support; they both stay out of Waters way and give as good as they get.

 STILL ALIVE AND WELL - Johnny Winter's "comeback" album from 1973. Johnny is one of the most underrated guitar players that ever picked up a 6-string. While deeply rooted in the blues, Johnny delivers some rippin' stripped-down rock and roll on this album. Production is held to a very minimum of overdubs, and it's basically Johnny with his bass player and drummer. No effects, no slick production tricks, just good old rock and roll. He's one of those rare guys that can just plug the guitar into and amp and rip it up. In addition to his masterful playing, Johnny serves up some of his patented gritty, soulful vocals.

What energy and passion Johnny put into his live sets. While there is only one original song here ("Mean Town Blues" - and it comes off sounding like a blues classic), the choice of covers is exceptional - from Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis to the Rolling Stones.

I had also forgotten how important Rick Derringer was to this band. He is the perfect foil for Johnny - matching J.W. lick for lick on guitar, playing flawless rhythm, and even singing lead on some of the Rock & Roll Medley. This is an excellent band - probably the best Winter ever toured with. Randy Jo Hobbs (bass) and a young Bobby Caldwell on "percussion" make a terrific rhythm section.

CAPTURED LIVE - There has never been a blues guitarist like him before, or after. The guitar playing between Johnny and Floyd Ratford always seemed to compliment each other to an extreme. Truly amazing are the guitar solos being played at the same time , on top of each other, but without using harmony, yet blending and complimenting each others licks in 2 completely different styles, rather than trying to out do each other.

The blues licks played on "Sweet Papa John" was and still is one of the hottest blues guitar examples of any age. I know there are lots of inspirational bluesmen out there, Stevie Ray Vaughan , Clapton, B.B. King ,Freddie King, Buddy Guy...etc.. the list could go on forever. But Johnny Winter definitely holds his own.

Sony/BMG have produced an overdue four disc retrospective on Johnny Winter, 'True To The Blues,' released two days after his 70th birthday. I'm giving it five stars because most of the music rates it, but if you're a big fan you probably have most of the contents. The only unreleased material is four cuts recorded live at the Atlanta Pop Festival (overdue for a boxed set and DVD itself). I've listed the sources underneath the respective tracks, and links to certain full albums I feel are his best. When trying to compile an artist with the longevity of Johnny there are bound to be fan favorites missing, personally I would've added "Leland Mississippi Blues," "Drown In My Own Tears" and "Fast Life Rider" instead of two versions each of "Mean Town Blues," "It's My Own Fault" and "Highway 61 Revisited" (even though each is studio & live), but I digress. Except for the first two tracks from his debut album on Liberty (now EMI) the rest of the first three discs and initial six tracks on the fourth are from his long tenure on Columbia Records, with his stops at Alligator, MCA, Pointblank, Friday and Sonobeat getting the short shrift. The only studio album not represented is 'I'm A Bluesman,' which some consider his weakest. The best white bluesman bar non, Johnny Winter's output over the years has had an impressive consistency, so if you've only touched your toe in the water before, it's a great set to get.
