Clouds is a stark stunner, a great leap forward for Joni Mitchell.
Vocals here are more forthright and assured than on her debut and exhibit a remarkable level of subtle expressiveness.
Guitar alone is used in accompaniment, and the variety of playing approaches and sounds is most impressive.
"The Fiddle and the Drum," a protest song that imaginatively compares the Vietnam-era warmongering U.S. government to a bitter friend, dispenses with instrumental accompaniment altogether.
The sketches presented of lovers by turns depressive ("Tin Angel"), roguish ("That Song About the Midway"), and faithless ("The Gallery") are vividly memorable.
Forthright lyrics about the unsureness of new love ("I Don't Know Where I Stand"), misuse of the occult ("Roses Blue"), and mental illness ("I Think I Understand") are very striking.
Mitchell's classic singer/songwriter standards "Chelsea Morning" and "Both Sides Now" respectively receive energetically vibrant and warmly thoughtful performances.
Imaginatively unusual and subtle harmonies abound here, never more so in her body of work than on the remarkable "Songs to Aging Children Come," which sets floridly impressionistic lyrics to a lovely tune that is supported by perhaps the most remarkably sophisticated chord sequence in all of pop music.
Mitchell's riveting self-portrait on the album's cover is a further asset.
This essential release is a must-listen

LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean and unmarked labels which have lost none of their strong vibrant colour and have barely a spindle trace to be seen
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+
Both surfaces shine like-new with just some light marks - these are purely superficial, mostly appear to be pressing blemishes within the vinyl itself and have no audio significance
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT++
Barely played, the sound quality on this first pressing is outstanding - crystal clear, fresh and incredibly immediate and my play-check at loud volume revealed no audio major issues of any kind - no scratches, no groove-wear or distortion or any signs of clipping to the higher vocal registers (which can be a common problem with this pressing).
I noted just a couple of isolated 'pops' throughout the course of both sides and the barest hint of surface (both extremely minor and nothing really) - plays beautifully - lovely copy - one of the finest I have seen in a while and they really don't come much better than this
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT+
Apart from a little storage rubbing to the bottom edge/spine the fully textured cover is in great shape - a very fine example - and all text on the very thin spine is clear and bold
LYRIC INSERT: EXCELLENT++
Clean and unmarked with no creases or folds
