Jazz isn't the easiest kind of music to write about, especially coming from the opinion of someone who doesn't have a practical grasp of music theory. To be enamoured with well-executed jazz in the way that I do seems somewhat contradictory given this information, but alas, albums like Winds of Change truly do alter my emotion and spirit in an indescribable fashion.

Jothan Callins was a jazz bassist and trumpeter from Birmingham, Alabama, a wonderful synchronicity given the recent review of Sun Ra, who's also from Birmingham. Jothan even performed with Sun Ra and joined the Arkestra in 1989, which, given the sounds of this album, honestly seems like it happened way too late.

Regardless of my conjecture on that topic, Winds of Change is a monumental record. Where (previously reviewed) albums like Shelley Manne and Kenny Drew operated on a different aesthetic that was more pertinent to lonely nights, dim lights and a fine meal, Winds of Change is an album that's more reminiscent of a thundering ocean tide crashing against a rocky cliff.

It being released on a label called 'Triumph', seemingly correlated to the final track of the same name, makes me think it was a private press. Though Callins and the Sounds of Togetherness toured extensively during his career, the lack of studio material is a depressing reality, having only this artefact to speak for his illustrious talents.

It's a compelling album, one that will fill you with energy, one that will incur the most whimsical of creative fantasies amidst your beautifully paralysed mind. With a Sun Ra influence on its sound that's neither overpowering nor detracting, Winds of Change is a jazz record that will change you

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The album comes with original 4-page insert/brochure

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
