·       Interestingly enough, this test pressing bears George Piros’ name or  his initials (GP) clearly stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). None of the commercially released versions of this album we have encountered thus far had his imprimatur in the trail-off vinyl. Apparently, George Piros was only involved in mastering a trial, demo version of the album; his services were not used for the final product.

I assume we will never know for sure why Judee Sill – probably at the very last moment – decided to change the original track listing of her first album (“Judee Sill”) by including the hit-single ‘Jesus was a cross-maker’ (which is NOT included in this test pressing) and deleting two other tracks from the  released version of the album (which ARE included in this test pressing)

We can only speculate that the inclusion of ‘Jesus was a Cross-maker’ was a last-minute compromise with David Geffen who probably desperately sought a hit single from his label’s first artist and first album  (and, indeed, ‘Jesus’ was a hit single and the biggest (and only) charting hit in Judee Sill’s brief career).

Whatever the case, we have a rare privilege of offering what surely must be the rarest Judee Sill pressing in existence: the original, abandoned blueprint for the Sill’s finest hour and greatest masterpiece, her eponymous first album, and one of only two studio albums she would release in her lifetime.

Here’s how this this test pressing differs from the released version:

(1)          The album plays 12 tracks, not 11. This test pressing has one track MORE than the released version

(2)          Some tracks are different: one track has been deleted (Jesus was a cross-maker), while two other tracks have been added (The Pearls, and The Phoenix, which would later appear on Sill’s second album). This proves conclusively and without any doubt that MAJOR portions of Sill’s second album (Heart Food)  - and quite possibly the entire second album - were, in fact recorded during the same sessions that produced her first album

(3)          Sequencing of the tracks  is different. The first side of the disc runs pretty much in the same order than on the released version, except that first track on side 2 of the released version (Ridge Rider) has repositioned on this test pressing from side 2, track 1 to side 1, track 6 (it essentially replaces Jesus was the cross-maker as the last track on side 1).  On the side 2, things become more interesting. Because side 2 no longer starts with Ridge Rider, it starts with  My Man on Love instead. This track is immediately followed by two unreleased tracks (The Pearl, and The Phoenix, respectively, which are not found on the released version of the album), and then the disc closes with the same three final tracks and in the same order than on the released version: Loping along through Cosmos – Enchanted Sky Machines – Abracadabra. 

(4)          We thought that we heard minor difference in the vocalese section of the arrangement for ‘The lamb ran away with the crown’, but because the arrangement is so complex and baroque, this may be merely a misperception on our part.  The rest of the tracks appear to – we are not entirely sure – mirror the mixes and the arrangements of the original versions.

Now for the bad news: the disc skips repeatedly (we counted about 5 skips on 4 different tracks) and one “sticking” point (where the needle repeats the same groove). It is entirely possible that the buyer will be able to force the disc to play without skipping by using different calibration and stylus pressure, however this is just speculation on our part. Buyer beware!.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER : This reference (test) pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover (NOT SEPARATELY GRADED, BUT OVERALL IN A REAL NICE CONDITION)
