Label/Format: Vertigo – Full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two. Please note also, this is one of the earliest pressings ever on this famous label. This rarer example includes the text ‘A Philips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position of the text side label. Only the earliest pressed Vertigo’s ever included this rare text, most are seen without it.

Label Conditions: Both in impressive visual condition, with only light to light+ and faint spindle marks. Ultra clean and highly attractive with no grubbiness or discolour to the ‘white side’. Lovely Spirals with the large formats and rare Philips text. Side two retains a superb snowy white finish that is as fresh and clean as press day. A very tight fit on my Linn spindle with no ‘give’ whatsoever, although the record has a few light surface marks, NONE sound and the audio quality is fantastic. The large spiral on side one has the design perfect right up to the very hole rims with no chipping or wear at all. These labels are really attractive and of course original.

Rarity: The earliest examples that include the ‘Philips’ label text are quite rare. All spirals are getting harder to find, many highly elusive with fewer becoming available. Including one of the most famous Spiral covers in very clean condition, the famous ‘Lucy’ of Vertigo records has rarely looked better. This is a very fine copy that should please many collectors of this highly desirable label.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This was Juicy Lucy’s first and for most, their best album, the second title within the highly sort-after Spiral catalogue – probably the most famous and collectable progressive label of them all. Not really ‘progressive’, but the Vertigo label is very known for being that. This really is one of the Spiral classics and includes one of the very best and famous covers too - this is always one of my favourite albums to offer and this is a very strong original copy. Earthy blues-rock featuring a supreme version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Who Do You Love’. This copy on offer features a very impressive and very clean sounding ‘Philips’ product’ full spiral record. It has some light surface marks that have no sound and audio quality is fantastic throughout. This is a top-drawer production and can be enjoyed with the ultimate details the first issues always offer. The cover is in fantastic condition with the least wear I have seen for some considerable time, the only blemish of any real note is a neat original female owner’s name inside near the top right corner. Very wear-prone like most spiral covers, but this one does the famous ‘Lucy’ proud. For collectors wanting the earliest pressing and a lovely, little-worn and still fresh cover, well this merits high consideration, if the lady owners name inside is an issue however…

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: few Vertigo Spiral album covers were laminated, hence many are seen badly rubbed, grubby and ringworn. This beauty has little of note to fault and will match and better most.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): with a fairly small and very neat name inside. Like the record, one of the earliest Spiral covers ever issued or made. An unlaminated gatefold format that is highly vulnerable to wear, especially ring wear and rubbing. This one has the original WARNING — Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings. etc inside the gatefold, later versions had the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘this label’. This was printed and made in England, but uncredited, includes the Spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A few eyebrows raised when this first hit the shops I guess. Quite unusual to find this famous cover looking this nice. The lack of rubbing, grubbiness and retention of rich unfaded colour will be immediately apparent. A few very fine and faint surface marks when viewed right up close, but devoid of any creasing worthy of mention. This classic front is unusually fine and eye-pleasing and for a change, has no sticker issues or enhancements.

Cover Back: The back is similar with no ring wear and again devoid of rubbing bar the the odd tiny corner tip trace. The VO 2 – 847 901 VTY top right text is pristine. A few very faint surface creases seen up close but few will ever have fewer or lighter. One tiny press mark near the top left edge is almost nit-picking small. With so many of these (and often later versions) looking shabby, worn and very tired, it’s a delight to see the classic Spiral cover looking this nice.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Emphasise again, this has the original ‘Vertigo’ warning inside and these are far rarer. Beware of cover swapping, only the originals have the Vertigo Warning inside. This is little short of perfect but again I mention, it has the original lady owner’s name near the top right edge towards the right corner, but when they are this neat, they personally worry me little. The plain-and-simple fact is, records of this era were prized and almost a luxury item and some owners wanted them identified as being their own and was a very common practice. When neatly done, I find it totally acceptable, less so, on the labels in my opinion.

Top Edges: Ultra light and tiny patchy rub traces only and both very straight.

Bottom Edges: A little light patchy rubbing, again very straight and this cover closes perfectly flat.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with little wear. Minimal burr traces or thickening and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed.

Spine and Text: The spine is in splendid condition. Very solid and straight with minimal traces of any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up near perfectly together and parallel too. All text is fully present and unworn, even the fine and fragile VO2. Even the foldlines are unrubbed, this is so unusual on these but what a difference it makes, the difference between an average cover and an exceptional one.

Corners: All corners have quite light tip rubs, will any not have? All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A really lovely excellent example, and the famous ‘fruity lady’ of prog will be very difficult to find much better these days. Most Spiral collectors should enjoy this one if the neat and quite small name inside is not an issue.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and these are getting harder to find in top conditions too. This is polylined and still well attached with a very neat and clear window. A couple of tiny window splits I neatly repaired to stop the changes of them increasing or catching in the future. Minimal ageing, toning or gum browning and clean and still quite white. Edges now intact after one neat edge movement split repair that show little. A few light creases, overall, a very fine and attractive looking swirl inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Near Excellent with some fine surface marks or odd small paper scuff but they have NO sound and this record plays superbly throughout. The most noticeable is a fine mark on ‘Chicago North Western’ that opens side two, but this too, is ignored and I cannot remember a pop or click on the entire album. A lovely visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed with above average weight. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again, but not the absolute visual perfectionist.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent record exceeds it’s fine visual for sound and plays beautifully with near audiophile sound quality that only the very first issues offer. Strong and powerful, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal to none and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The light marks are ignored and being honest, I have heard few better sounding copies of this album. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better for clean enjoyable sound with clean inner and highly attractive, little worn cover, and on that basis, it can be strongly recommended. An available vintage Philips first issue will not prove easy to find a great deal better.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
