Description
Literally one of my favorite pitch black torch albums ever, and it partners perfectly with Sinatra's similarly midnight-tinged heartbreak album, "In The Wee Small Hours" (and that very song is on this record too.) Gorgeous cover art, and I love the way they used a gold metallic tint for the clock numbers and Julie's pants and shoes. Julie was one of the finest jazz vocalists of her era, with a uniquely sultry vibe and gorgeous smoky voice, and here she is blessed with a superb song selection ranging from Strayhorn's "Lush Life" (which she knocks out of the park), the haunting title track (by Thelonius Monk), to Erroll Garner's "Misty" and the Gershwin classic, "But Not For Me."
This is the original monophonic issue of this record from 1960 on Liberty Records, LRP 3164. Note that the original inner paper sleeve is included, in VG+ condition. We play tested this album in full and grade the vinyl VG+; the sound quality overall is excellent, with just a quiet pop here and there. No consistent snap-crackle-pop/surface noise, no skips, no distortion. Visually the disc is clean and glossy. The jacket's cover is superb, no ring wear or price stickers, consistent color without fading or discoloration. Given that the beautiful cover is a large part of this record's appeal, it's nice that the special metallic gold ink used on Julie's pants, her pillow, the clock numbers and the Liberty logo is still shiny and bright. The back shows a little ring wear and light signs of use. There is a top split, but it doesn't show when you are enjoying the cover. Spine is legible. There are no smells or stains. We grade the jacket VG+ also.
