Description
Rare and historically significant Folkways Records release:
Yamekraw: An Original Composition by James P. Johnson, catalog FJ 2842, featuring James P. Johnson at the piano and recorded by Moses Asch.
This copy is hand-signed by James P. Johnson and includes multiple handwritten inscriptions, including a dedication reading:
“To my pal & friend Perry Bradford – from James P. Johnson”
Additional handwritten notes appear along the borders and bottom of the cover, adding strong provenance and archival interest.
Yamekraw is considered a landmark work in African American classical music, often cited alongside Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as a foundational American rhapsodic composition rooted in Black musical tradition.
Released by Folkways Records, known for museum-grade ethnomusicological documentation, this album is highly sought after by:
• Folkways collectors
• Jazz & stride piano historians
• Black American music scholars
• Institutional archives & libraries
The album includes original Folkways liner notes, documenting the cultural and historical background of the work.
An exceptional signed example of a scarce Folkways pressing—far less common with autograph and personal dedication.
