Janos Starker Born: July 1924 Budapest Nationality: originally Hungarian, later American One of the outstanding cellists of the mid-to-late 20th century, often compared with Casals Studied at Budapest Academy from age 7; made his debut there at 11. Graduated after WWII, becoming principal cellist of the Budapest Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra Left Hungary 1948 and settled in the USA, where he became principal cellist of several orchestras including the Dallas Symphony (1948-9), the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (1949-53) and the Chicago Symphony orchestra (1953-8) 1958, settled in Bloomington, Indiana, where he was professor of cello at Indiana University. Also enjoyed international solo career Playing much admired for exquisite tone and musicality. Many outstanding recordings included Bach’s cello suites, concertos by Boccherini, Haydn, Schumann, Dvorak, Prokofiev and Hindemith Also a fine chamber music performer, playing with the Roth String Quartet, and in a piano trio with Josef Suk and Julius Katchen. Has recorded cello sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms and Kodaly, among others Editions include Bach’s cello suites, Beethoven’s sonatas and Dvorak’s concerto Plays cellos by Goffriller (1706) and G.B. Guarneri (1707)
