Description
This great cover has Basquiat arwork on both sides. This and The Offs record are great because
they represent two of only a handful of 'prints' that were actually authorised by the artist.
It also represents the moment when the downtown NYC No-Wave Scene and the Bronx
rap/breakdance/graffiti scene met in the early 1980s. Aparantly ‘Beat Bop’ came about
when Fab 5 Freddy took Ramelzee to meet the up and coming (and now legendary),
Jean-Michel Basquiat. Ramelzee, known as one of the originators of Graffiti, underground
art, and street culture, thought Basquiat was a fraud. Their conversations got so heated that
they eventually took it to the form of a recorded battle over an electro / hip hop instrumental
that Basquiat had produced himself. Ramelzee later tossed the lyrics Basquiat had recorded
and told fellow wordsmith K-Rob to go off on a different level. That song was eventually
released as ‘Beat Bop’.
Well I guess Ramelzee was right on one level Basquiat was more of a Fine Artist than a Street Artist
and used street art to promote himself. But the sincerity and passion in his work were at least as vital as any hip hop artist.
