Hello. This will be a lengthy description, so please read in full and twice if need be. Up for sale is a very rare complete set of The Saga of Mr. Jelly Lord. Let's start at the beginning. Jelly Roll Morton is considered the founder or one of the founders of Jazz. He was born Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe. He was born in New Orleans. He is a piano player, At the height of his success in the late 20's and 30's he was the Michael Jordan of his time. In 1938 a man named Alan Lomax decided to record Jelly Roll. These recordings, which are him playing piano and voice recordings, were made for the Library of Congress. In 1947 Circle Records decided to release a limited edition of these recordings. These recordings, which are up for auction, are of the red vinylite variety. Only 250 of these were made. It is a set of 45 12" records. They are jm-1through jm-90. In 1947 the original subscription fee was $120. That's a lot of money in 1947. This limited edition in numbered 307. I have seen 309 and 326 elsewhere, not complete sets. I'm going to guess these were numbered 100-350. These were originally recorded starting in May 1938 and finished in December 1938. Circle Records were the first to release these. Apparently there were speed faults in these recordings and they needed to be played at 85 RPM. It is very difficult to find a lot of information on these. I've tried to provide the most information I could find. I also know that at the 48th Grammy Awards these won a couple of awards. I believe if only 250 were ever made of the red vinylite in 1947, how many people truly have a complete set. These are very rare. Now to the condition. The jackets have wear around the edges as seen in the pictures. A couple have old scotch tape on them that is also seen in the pictures. The sleeves are in fantastic condition. In picture 8 you see the worst of the sleeves. It looks like an old stain. As far as the records go, I would call these near mint, as I don't believe they have ever been played. They are just too clean. Each volume weighs almost 3 pounds. In order to protect them better, I will be mailing them in 3 boxes. I want to make sure they have ample protection. I don't want to mail a box that weighs 40 pounds. So please be expecting 3 different packages, I hope they arrive at the same time, but they may not. You pay for shipping and I will pay for insurance, which will be more than the shipping. I'm starting these off at $650 which I believe is a "steal." I believe their value is more than that and will only grow in time. If you collect Jelly Roll Morton, limited edition, red vinylite, original Jazz music or very rare and almost impossible to find music then you cannot pass on this.
