Jim Manns & The Blackmailers – Messing With The Kid / Rap On

White Label Promo 45

Borderline VG/VG+ record due to some hairlines only visible from certain angles and a light scratch.

The A side is the same song made popular by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells under the name "Messin' With The Kid"...but this version has more of a soulful and funky Mecca-type groove to it, and it's AMAZING! The lyrics were tweaked a little bit and we swear we heard some musical phrasing that sounded a lot like the same riff as "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and also Marvin Gaye in 1968. It's hard to say which came out first because we could not nail down an exact release year for this 45. It's a bit crazy to think that it was THIS record that inspired the timeless melody for 'Grapevine', but it's pretty safe to say that this 45 came out in the 60's because Mel London wasn't too active in the R&B and Blues scenes after the 60's and died in 1975. This 45 single was released on Mel Records, which was Mel London's label. He wrote 'Messing With The Kid' along with several other hit R&B and Blues songs, so he definitely has a good track record for writing hits. The imagination can definitely run wild with theories...but it just seems too similar to not be somehow connected.
