Description
This is an original metal based "Emidisc" acetate demonstration disc, from February / March 1967 of Jimi Hendrix performing "The Wind Cries Mary".
I was given this, at the time, by a friend who was working at Olympic Studios and knew I was interested in Hendrix.
The song was originally recorded in February 1967 at De Lane Lea Studios, but the record company were not entirely satisfied with the recording and the track was revisited when the band moved to recording at Olympic Studios a few weeks later.
There are rumours that the track was rerecorded. This wasn't the case but there were changes made to the drum sound, and minor adjustments were apparently attempted to the drum track near the end of the song. In fact most sources agree that in the end the original was released without any change.
My feeling is that this disc was made as a test pressing at some stage of this process, probably quite early on since on the disc the title is wrongly listed as "The Wind Cried Mary". A very small number of these would have been made either for the band and producers benefit, or to send to the record company and publishers.
I make no claims that this is an alternate take or even alternate mix, but being a test pressing it is likely to be subtly different from the final release, if only because of differences in settings at the point of cutting the disc.
It is in very good condition, it has a surface scuff and has been played more times than is advisable for these discs, but plays well and this is an opportunity to own an original piece of rock history.
