Description
Gotham Records was a Philly-based R&B label which formed just after World War II and stayed in business until the advent of the rock and roll era. It had a varied catalog, including gospel and jazz artists, but in its final couple of years in business it became one of the leading proponents of Philadelphia doo-wop. IT was the dawn of rock and/or roll and really brought together the blues and swing influences that made the '50s what they were, in 1949. The sax breaks on "Rock the Joint" were the work of tenor player Danny Turner (1920-1995). “Rock The Joint” was re-recorded by Bill Haley and the Saddlemen in 1952. Indeed music publisher Ballen and owner of Gotham records threatened a lawsuit saying “Rock Around the Clock” later performed by Bill Haley and the Comets, was lifted from “Rock the Joint”. I am not an expert in vintage records, however, this old record is very shiny with no visible scratches or knicks. I did play and the vocals and horns sound great.
