Description

A cult classic when it comes to post bop & spiritual jazz. A personal favorite without a doubt. Some songs employ three percussionists / drummers at a time, which sounds like it might lean towards sounding a little busy but never does. The records overall tone is set early in the first (title) track and maintains that tone throughout - a sort of tribal, hypnotic, forward driving as far as pace and rhythm vibe. Moments in this record stir up Can (the German psych krautrock band) vibes. Definitely some Afro-Cuban feels in here as well, with congas, drums and marimba layered over top of each other.


That’s not even delving into the contributions of non-percussionists such as Woody Shaw, Harold Vick, Richard Davis, Cecil McBee, Garnett Brown, Joe Zawinul, Cedar Walton AND more. This was a calculated statement record that was and is a defining moment (if not THE defining moment) of Joe Chambers career.


This reissue is a 8/10 as far as sonics go, if we’re considering the original release a 10/10. AKA this is a great sounding reissue.
