Mega rare experimental percussion lp containing the only ever vinyl recording of Cage's Living Room Music - a beautiful and pioneering performance art piece composed for 4 players on "any household object or architectural element" such as magazines, books, the floor, wooden window frame, etc., also incorporating "vocal percussion" and the text of a Gertrude Stein poem in its third movement. The other works on this lp are no less interesting, with Loevendie's piece for 6 conga players and rearrangements of Joplin's ragtimes for drums, marimbas, and xylophone particular highlights, plus other compositions involving tuned and untuned, eastern and western percussion, all performed by Slagwerkgroep Den Haag. A recommended, rarely-seen avant garde percussion music gem.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Harrison studied with Henry Cowell, Arnold Schoenberg, and Virgil Thomson and worked with John Cage, Charles Ives, and Harry Partch; he taught at the legendary Black Mountain College with David Tudor and Stefan Wolpe.
