Impossible-to-find still-sealed original of one of the great and essential early electronic music records! The Cage work involves a set of ambiguous notations from which the performer(s) must derive various compositional parameters. In this realization, David Tudor gives a pioneering live electronic/electroacoustic performance by playing on the inside and outside of a heavily amplified piano, creating a spectacular organic soundscape of feedback-soaked plucking, banging, springing, and resonating. Contact microphones and phonograph cartridges were placed on the piano strings and well as on a variety of everyday materials (toothpicks, pipe cleaners, etc.) which were used to stroke the strings. Babbitt's Ensembles was made using the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center's RCA Electronic Sound Synthesizer (the most advanced machine of its kind at the time); it incorporates serialist principles in a gloriously atonal sequence of carefully tweaked early synth tones and chords. The Pousseur work is a musique concrete piece derived from tape-manipulated instruments, voices, and electronically generated noise; it was originally commissioned to accompany a projection/installation by artist Nicolas Schoeffer but was rejected as "too unusual." With notes by Musica Elettronica Viva co-founder Richard Teitelbaum.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Babbitt studied under Marion Bauer and Roger Sessions and became known for his extension of the theories of Schoenberg into a 'total serialism', similar to techniques used by Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono; he created electronic music at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center along with Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Bulent Arel, Mario Davidovsky, and Ilhan Mimaroglu. • Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), composed early electronic music in Louis and Bebe Barron's studio and at the Studio di Fonologia in Milan (where Henri Pousseur, Luciano Berio, Luigi Nono, Andre Boucourechliev, Bengt Hambraeus, and Bruno Maderna also worked), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, Lejaren Hiller, Sun Ra, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). • Henri Pousseur worked with Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, and Stockhausen, and composed music at European early electronic music studios such as those at Milan and Koln. • Should also be of interest to fans of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Bernard Parmegiani, Tod Dockstader, Luc Ferrari, Dick Raaijmakers, MEV, AMM, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Hugh Davies, Sonic Arts Union, Otomo Yoshihide, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, and Robert Ashley.
