• Item: Attention International Bidders: I need to state the full sales price of this item on the Customs forms and ship it to you USPS Express Mail International. I need to do this for both insurance and 'signature confirmation' reasons. Thank you for understanding. Now, onto the item -- Here we have a Prestige original pressing of John Coltrane's first solo album entitled Coltrane with number 7105 or PRLP 7105. 7105 was released in 1957, the year that Prestige moved it's offices from New York to Bergenfield, NJ. There are two types of original pressings of this LP, one with the NY address and one with the NJ address. This example is of the NJ variety. As you can see from my pictures, the record itself is deep groove and has the flat edge. In 1957 the industry standard changed from flat edge to safety lip. The record offered here was certainly made from the first stampers dating to 1957. With Goldmine's Jazz Album Price Guide 2nd ed. (Neely) not differentiating between addresses only label colors, I feel that specialists already know the information provided here. The record comes in it's original onion skin sleeve and album cover jacket. It's properly marked in the trail-off deadwax "RVG" for Rudy Van Gelder the engineer. It's also marked "AB" for Abbey Manufacturing (the original record plant). By 1958, Prestige had started to use their silver and black fireworks label. I have played and listed to this particular record in full and can tell you that it doesn't skip & sounds rich, deep and full. I'm not an album grader but would rate the record an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Perhaps you can rate it better after cleaning the record and doing minor repairs on the jacket. This is a significant album in that it's Coltrane's first solo effort and from a landmark time in both Prestige Records' and the record industry's history.



• Markings: "PRLP 7105". Most other etched, printed and stamped markings are shown in my 50 or so pictures. Original price sticker extant on front cover ($4.19). If you need additional info or pictures, don't hesitate to ask.



• Age: A 1957 release and from all evidence from the first one year of production. I'm not sure of the terminology, but later pressings are on a blue label with trident logo and from the 1960's.



• Condition: Used. The record does not and will not skip or repeat & is enjoyable to listen to.



• Dimensions: Standard size 12 inch LP.



• Origin: Found in New Jersey near Philadelphia.



• Features: Landmark first solo album by African American jazz artist John Coltrane. His Prestige and Blue Note records are much more rare than the Impulse releases although I like them too (!).



• Background: Coltrane is the debut album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1957 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7105. The recordings took place at the studio of Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, New Jersey, and document Coltrane's first session as a leader. It has been reissued at times under the title of First Trane. As a result of his exposure as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige Records owner and producer Bob Weinstock offered Coltrane a recording contract. Dated April 9, 1957, it stipulated three albums per year at $300 per album. Coltrane had previously recorded as a sideman, and had co-led a session with Paul Quinichette released in 1959 as Cattin' with Coltrane and Quinichette, but never as sole bandleader. Coltrane had actually just been fired by Davis in April 1957 for drug abuse, but retreated home to Philadelphia to clean himself out. He returned to New York City for mid-May sessions with Prestige, this one taking place the day after Memorial Day. By the summer, Coltrane would be recording with Thelonious Monk and playing as a member of his quartet for the rest of the year. Coltrane chose a tune by his friend Calvin Massey, in addition to three standards including the relatively obscure "Time Was." The titles to the Coltrane originals, "Chronic Blues" and "Straight Street," indicate his struggles with substance abuse and his new-found resolve after conquering his habits. Sidemen included Paul Chambers and Red Garland from the Davis band, and Philadelphia colleagues Johnny Splawn and Albert Heath.
