John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio is a neat little 1957 pressure cooker. With Garland, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor leaving him plenty of runway, the North Carolina tenor can really worry at a phrase until it starts to fray. 'Traneing In' does exactly that with Garland's bluesy piano setting up increasingly dense Coltrane runs. Chambers is brilliantly nimble on 'Bass Blues', especially with the bow and 'Slow Dance' has this lovely late-night gravity to it. Then 'Soft Lights and Sweet Music' shoots off at bebop pace; everyone somehow keeping their cuffs clean.
