“(Just Like) Starting Over” was the first single released from John and Yoko’s 1980 LP Double Fantasy, and the first new recording John had released since 1975. John chose it as the first single, not because he felt it was the best track on the album, but because it was the most appropriate following his five-year absence from the recording industry. He referred to it during production as the "Elvis/Orbison" track, as he "tongue in cheek" impersonated their vocal styles. The uplifting bell at the intro of the song serves as the antidote to the morose bell sound which opens his first solo album, with John seeing it as his having come full circle.
“(Just Like) Starting Over” was John’s biggest solo American hit, staying at Number One for five weeks. In the UK it had peaked at Number 8 and had fallen to Number 21, but upon John's death it made an unprecedented Number 21 to Number One move. By January 6, 1981, there were three John Lennon songs in the UK Top Five, a feat never achieved before or since.
“(Just Like) Starting Over” is ranked Number 53 on Billboard's All Time Top Songs list.
"Woman" was the second single released from the Double Fantasy album, and the first John Lennon single issued after his death. In an interview for Rolling Stone magazine on December 5, 1980, John said that "Woman" was a "grown-up version" of his song "Girl." “Woman” debuted at Number Three in the UK, moved to Number Two, and finally reached Number One, where it knocked off his own re-released “Imagine.” In the U.S. the single spent three consecutive weeks at Number Two.
