Item Description

John Lennon – Roots: Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits (Adam VIII Ltd. – A 8018)

Pressing features: John Lennon Roots LP, available for only three days in January 1975 via a short NYC TV ad. About 3,000 pressed before being pulled by Capitol/Apple. This copy shows many authentic indicators (see photos + description below):

Authenticity Identifiers:

  • JACKET SPINE: The spine reads “John Lennon sings the Great Rock n Roll Hits” Counterfeits read “… greatest” instead of “great”. No authentic copy has “greatest” on the spine or anywhere on the cover.
  • COVER IMAGE: John Lennons shoulder flesh must be visible in the bottom right. Some counterfeits use a slightly enlarged copy of the front cover which crops out the shoulder.

  • FRONT COVER LETTERING: Bottom right near John’s shoulder is the LP number 8018 and the words “STEREO”. All individual letters on Stereo must be distinct and clear. Some counterfeits have these letters either running together or blurred.
  • REAR COVER IMAGES: the printing on the little album covers in the advertisement are legible. This is not to say they are perfectly obvious because the print is really small. But the lettering on the Solid Gold album that read "Original Hits" & "By the Original Artists" are in distinct letters that don't bleed into each other. Similarly, the artist names on the small Soul Train cover ("Sylvia", "Isaac Hayes", "B.B.King", "Spinners", "The Dells", etc.) are in distinct white letters that don't bleed into each other. Lettering on counterfeits are illegible. Some counterfeits have blurry ink, over-inking or under-inking.
  • VINYL WEIGHT: The record itself is made of medium weight vinyl. Some counterfeits were pressed on unusually thick vinyl.
  • MATERIAL: Cover Material is white poster board. (Counterfeits will have a paste on cover slick)
  • LABELS: The labels must be clear on both sides and of standard 70’s print size. Many counterfeits have enlarged labels or blurry labels.
  • MATRIX: has "Bell Sound" stamp in tight italics on both sides, along with cursive "Joe" on both sides. Some counterfeits lack the Bell Sound stamp, or have the Bell Sound stamp on only one side (it must be both sides). Matrix numbers in runouts are A8018-A on side 1 and A8018-B on side 2
  • ETCHING: Original pressings feature the matrix number A8018 etched under the Side 1 label. This marking is extremely hard to see. I haven’t been able to clearly view it on this copy.

Vinyl Record grade: Near Mint, record is flawless and appears almost unplayed, with no scratches, no scuffs, or no warping. The surface is glossy, the sound is clean with no noise. Pristine.

Cover/Jacket grade: NM/VG++, Jacket artwork is clear and virbant, seams are intact, spine is strong, no writing. Excellent.

Other contents: Inner sleeve is missing, but vinyl is stored in a protective anti-static sleeve.

Record will be packed in a plastic outer sleeve with the record placed outside of the album jacket to prevent seam splits and securely sent in a reinforced media mailer with fragile stickers displayed on outside.
