Johnny Hodges - The Smooth One with Two previously unreleased sessions 1959 1960. Condition is New. Excerpt from the liner notes read... The two complete session in this collection recorded in 1959 and 1960, place Johnny Hodges in the company of peers and friends, and in the kind of swinging context he most enjoyed. They are full of the happiness and lyrical grace that were so abundantly his. Prior to his death in 2970, Hodges was the outstanding soloist of Duke Ellington's orchestra for nearly forty years; a player of consistent excellence, and unarguably the alto saxophonist who gave more pleasure to more people than any other. He would sometimes come quietly into a studio in new York or Los Angeles and find himself among some of the most technically accomplished musicians in the world. By the time the session was over, they would pronounce him a "natural" shaking their heds with mingled awe and envy. It was a high compliment from those who had acquired their proficiency by diligent study hard work and practice, but they recognized that what Hodges possessed was truly a rare gift.
