JON LUCIEN - SEARCH FOR THE INNER SELF backed with IT'S BIGGER THAN I - AMPEX RECORDS. VG+, plays excellent. This is an essential soul tune, the greatest ever recorded by Jon Lucien, an uttely sublime and haunting track that has so many elements I don't even dare to try to describe them all, or liken this to any other piece of music other than Lucien's own "Would you believe in Me," which is way more watered down, commercial and simply nowhere near as good as Search for the Inner Self. It's as though Jon Lucien tapped into some serious future vibe for this first recording of his -- it's a blend of island & northern soul, jazz scat ... an epic, epic tune that just builds and builds and builds...tremendously orchestrated... I literally go stiff with musical fear whenever I put it on... it's a truly intimidating song!!!! I guess it was all downhill for Lucien after that... he probably realized that if ever wanted to make money he wouldn't be able to continue writing music this good. One of Gilles Peterson's favorites, it was recently compiled on the Gilles Peterson Digs America Brownswood USA cd. This tune was also a personal favorite of John Peel, and made the top twenty favorite list (featured in Big Daddy magazine about 4 years back) from the owners of the Sound Library in NYC - the most influential record store for rare groove in america (which is to say, the record store owners are absolute connoisseurs, and a top twenty list from them carries some very heavy weight). Lastly on the enthusiastic-praise list is yers truly: this is one of my personal favorite 7"s, as well. I'm happy to be able to offer it up for the collector market, but for those who just want to hear the song and save some money, you can always buy the excellent gilles comp, which is one of his best in years and finds him getting back to his roots of basement rarities. (I only use the following grades: SEALED, NM, VG+, VG. Grading is visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I post. In my terminolgy Scratches are feeler types and Scuffs are just cosmetic and inaudible. I only post original presssings unless otherwise stated!)
