Joni Mitchell? Laura Nyro? Essra Mohawk? Linda Perhacs? All are among my favourite female singers of the late 60s / early 70s. But some how Judee Sill wins out every time. I hope it’s not the tragedy that gives her the edge…

Both her albums are now rightly regarded as classics and I can never decide which one I like the best. Right now, since I started playing it, it has to be Heart Food. Of course, her debut included the wonderful Jesus Was A Crossmaker (produced by Graham Nash) - which I guess is her most famous song – and Lady-O, cevered by the Turtles. But the second (and rarer) LP has, among so many pearls, The Kiss: sublime, sad, hopeful – a staircase of strings and piano…“stars bursting in the sky, hear the sad nova’s dyin’ cry…” Ahh…

And the list of musicians has to be seen to be believed (the scan is a little dark I know). They include (in no particular order) Lynn Blessing (who recorded an unreleased Sill track on his LP Sunset Painter), Douglas Dillard (Dillard & Clark), Chris Ethridge (The Flying Burrito Brothers), Gloria Jones (who sand 'Tainted Love' and was driving Marc Bolan when he died - spooky), Spooner Oldham, Bill Plummer (of the Cosmic Brotherhood on Impulse) and Emilo Richard (also on Impulse and who recorded a great 45 with Lowell George & The Factory). Crikey!

OK, I’m only selling this because I have a US copy and I think someone else should be enjoying this as much as I do. The UK press of this LP is, I believe, even rarer than the US one.

Condition: The cover on this 1st pressing is laminated and shiny – it was made by the ubiquitous Garrod & Lofthouse, who also printed the original Beatles sleeves and so many others. As so often with these covers, the laminate has begun to ‘bubble’ near the spine, but it is not peeling. There are some creases but these are not serious – i.e. they do not go through to the other side. Apart from a little wear at the corners and along a two inch strip of the bottom edge the sleeve is sharp and clean. Oh yes, and the glue has started to separate from the top opening, but this can easily be stuck back down. The lyric sheet is perfect. Overall VG+.

The record and label are pristine. Visually the vinyl retains its lustre although under bright light there are some very faint hairlines and rub marks apparent. The record plays cleanly with very occasional pops, no clicks and only the tiniest of crackle – this is a typical quality thick Asylum pressing and the mastering is superb! Overall I would grade it VG+.

As I say, I try to describe as accurately as I can. At the end of the day this is a rare and important album in truly remarkable condition. If I hadn't come across a genuinely mint US copy then I wouldn't be selling this one - I'm not looking for a replacement either. Finally I guarantee everything I sell. If you don't like it send it back. But you will like it, I promise.

Obviously it will cost less per record for multiple items and more if you want insurance. 

My guarantee: I hate vague descriptions and misleading gradings as much as anyone else - hence I will try and avoid gratuitous use of the word ‘psych’ as well as EXCESSIVE CAPITALS and exclamation marks!!! Because I only sell records when I have duplicates, these are all records I still enjoy. The aim is not to make a profit but to put money towards buying more records. Of course, grading is always subjective, so I will attempt to describe what every record actually looks and sounds like. I hope that my feedback (100% as a seller) speaks for itself - every record I sell is guaranteed.
