Description
The band is called Slomo and the album is called The Bog, so you're pretty sure you know what you're getting into, right? And you're correct: this album's single track goes on for over an hour and consists entirely of dark, almost sepulchral tones that are generated by guitarist Holy McGrail and keyboardist Howard Marsden. The bulk of the composition is a duet that sounds something like being buried alive in a peat bog -- if, that is, being buried alive in a peat bog were a warm, restful, slightly creepy but mostly rather contemplative experience. Towards the end the sound turns quite different: like a field recording of someone clearing metal tools and discarded armor out of a stone prison. And then, at the very end, comes the surprise: Julian Cope (yes, that Julian Cope) reciting a poem titled "Land," a poem that is also printed inside the disc jacket and seems to have provided the inspiration for this piece of music. It depicts the garroting and burial (in a bog) of someone for reasons not specified, though ritual necessity is strongly implied. The poem's imagery is reinforced by the cover art, which is extremely creepy: two hooded men seen from the back; an ancient burlap mask; the leg of an exhumed corpse; what looks like a scalp with plaited hair. That the music itself should be both so sepulchral, so texturally static, and yet so compelling is what's really amazing about this deeply strange but ultimately very impressive album. ~ Rick Anderson
