Jutta - Jutta Hipp Quintet - 1954

New Faces - New Sounds From Germany

Jutta Hipp, who passed away at the age of 78 in 2003 while living in Queens NYC, is one of the obscure treasures of jazz piano and this 1954 session (1955 release date) has become a classic. Echoes of Bud Powell and Lennie Tristano permeate her style, though she is much more Jutta than anything else. She had one of the basic concepts of great jazz down cold - it's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play that make it sing.

Leonard Feather was her mentor, arranging gigs and sessions in the States, but what many folks don't realize is that this session, her first of any reknown, was done at Feather's urging (he also wrote these liner notes) in April, 1954 at the Franz Althoff Bau in Frankfurt-au-Main, Germany and then pressed in the States by Blue Note. Jutta's full history bears exploration, but I will leave that up to you.

As to condition, all in all, I find this side to be very acceptable, but I want you to be fully informed before bidding. The disc is in very good condition, but there are visible scratches on both sides, most hairline and insignificant, but one that can be felt. Ultimately, it is in very good auditory condition. If you prefer more detailed jpegs of these items, please contact me and I will be happy to provide them. The labels are in excellent shape on both sides. Side two has a couple of visible fingerprints. The ink is solid and brightly colored. There is essentially no spindle wear. Ear mark in the dead wax on both sides, of course.

The cover is in good condition on the front, some imbedded dust and some scratches but really quite nice. There is the most minor disc impression on the cover, only visible upon inspection in the lower third. The rear cover suffered from stripping away of some portion of the printed material on the top edge and the right rear, though I can't tell when or how it happened. Completely visible in the photo. Liner notes are intact and in very good shape. There is edge wear all around, and two splits on the lower edge, one from the opening back about two inches and a second in the center of the lower edge, also about two inches in length. All in all, this is one fine LP.
