On offer here is an EXTREMELY RARE original issue of the only album by Sydney-based rock band, KAHVAS JUTE.  This is an absolute classic heavy progressive rock album, and undeniably one of the best from downunder.  The dual guitar assault of Dennis Wilson and Tim Gaze (only seventeen at the time), along with the exploratory bass of Bob Daisley (in the Jack Bruce style) and highly innovative drumming of Dannie Davidson, contribute to a superb selection of tracks.  Every song is a sure-fire winner, with my personal favourites being “She’s So Hard to Shake” and “Parade of Fools”.

Dennis Wilson and Bob Daisley had previously been members of MECCA, the Sydney band that issued the “Black Sally” single in March 1970 (also covered by New Zealand prog rockers HUMAN INSTINCT).  After relocating to the UK in 1972, Bob Daisley played with a number of well-known rock outfits including Chicken Shack, Widowmaker, Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, Uriah Heep and the Gary Moore Band.

Tim Gaze and Dannie Davidson played on the highly regarded TAMAM SHUD “Goolutionites and the Real People” album (recorded May 1970), just prior to joining KAHVAS JUTE.  Both performers have continued to be highly active in the music scene.

KAHVAS JUTE reunited on stage for a one-off gig at The Basement in Sydney on 17th July 2005.  Dennis Wilson, Tim Gaze, Bob Daisley and a ‘new’ drummer Mark Marriott performed five tracks that originally appeared on the “Wide Open” album, as well as some new material.  This is currently available as a combined DVD/CD package entitled “Kahvas Jute Then Again”.  The accompanying 12-track CD includes six new band recordings from January 2005 (studio and live versions).

front: VG+(+) laminated with a beautiful appearance: insignificant ring-wear (mainly outer rim - hard to see), minor creasing & a few very minor scuff spots (along spine), surface rubbing, very minor spot peeling (bottom-right corner).

inside gatefold: VG++ matt finish: minor signs of ring-wear & rubbing (mainly outer rim), otherwise highly acceptable.

back: VG+ laminated with a beautiful appearance: light ring-wear (mainly outer rim – hard to see on black background), minor creasing (along spine, top & bottom seams), few minor scuff spots (along spine), surface rubbing, very minor spot peeling (bottom-left corner).

Record:

G+ visual: still retains an impressive glossy sheen—numerous mainly light hairlines/surface scuffs, however there are also a few light scratches.  There is also a more prominent scratch on SIDE 2 beginning from two-thirds of the way through track 2 to about one minute into track 4.

audible: Side 1: PUNCHY and VIBRANT SOUND despite some underlying surface noise & occasional light pops.  Side 2: same as above except scratch across tracks 2-4 (part thereof) resulting in three skips (track 2: 3 mins 11 secs + 3 mins 33 secs / track 4: 26 secs) and the occasional (not constant) light clicking sound (also refer visual description above).

labels: moderate spindle wear (side 1), light spindle wear & spot stain (side 2).

I’VE JUST LISTENED TO THIS ALBUM LOUD WITH SOME FRIENDS OUT ON MY BALCONY (ADJACENT TO THE MUSIC ROOM), AND IT SOUNDS HOT!  EVERYONE IS BLOWN AWAY BY THE EXPLOSIVE SOUND COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS.  YES, THERE ARE A FEW SKIPS (ON SIDE 2 ONLY) AND SOME UNDERLYING SURFACE NOISE, WHICH CAN PRIMARILY BE HEARD DURING THE RARE QUIETER MOMENTS, BUT OVERALL THE SOUND IS HIGHLY ACCEPTABLE.  MY FRIENDS AND I CERTAINLY THINK SO!

IF YOU DON’T MIND A LOWER GRADED COPY OF THIS ALBUM THAT YOU CAN STILL PLACE ON YOUR TURNTABLE, TURN UP LOUD, PLAY AND ENJOY, WELL THEN THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU!  HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE SEEKING A NEAR MINT COPY, YOU WILL (OBVIOUSLY) NEED TO LOOK ELSEWHERE.
