»Diese Einspielung der Ersten Symphonie von Brahms bietet eine hervorragende Möglichkeit zum Vergleich der derzeit Besten ihres Fachs. Böhms Aufnahme ist von einer wunderbaren Detailfülle, die Soli der Holzbläser charaktervoll, die Kolorierung durch das Orchester wunderschön bemessen: wo Karajan eine gemischte Totalität des Klangs präsentiert, ist es Böhm wichtig, dass wir sowohl den Wald als auch die Bäume sehen. Böhms Sicht auf die Symphonie ist lebhaft und drängend: ohne die breite Stärke der Einleitung zu vernachlässigen ist das folgende Allegro von einer entschlossenen sportlichen Gewandtheit, die in besonders auffälliger Weise mit einer fast schon Verbissenheit zu nennenden Interpretation von Karajan kontrastiert. Die Einleitung zum Finale bietet ebenfalls aufschlussreiche Vergleichsmöglichkeiten: Karajan sieht sie als beredte Klage, Böhm als einen Übergang voll unerträglicher Spannung – man fürchtet beinahe, dass das große C-Dur-Thema nicht zum Abschluss kommen wird. Dies ist eine prächtige Darbietung, die kein Brahms-Liebhaber versäumen sollte zu hören, unabhängig von seinen derzeitigen Vorlieben; zudem handelt es sich um eine exzellente Aufnahme.«

»This performance of the (Brahms) First Symphony is formidable competition for even the best that the current catalogue can offer. Böhm’s performance is of wonderfully rich detail, the woodwind soli full of character, the orchestral colouring beautifully judged: where Karajan presents a blended totality of sound, Böhm is intent that we should see both the wood and the trees. Böhm’s view of the Symphony is urgent and vigorous: though he does not miss the broad strength of the introduction, the ensuing allegro has a purposeful athleticism that contrasts most strikingly with the heavy grimness of Karajan’s reading. The introduction to the finale is also an instructive comparison: Karajan sees it as an eloquent lament, Böhm as a transition of unbearable tension – one almost dreads that the great C major theme will not, after all, arrive. This is a noble performance that no Brahmsian should miss hearing, regardless of his current preferences; it is excellently recorded.«
