Auf der Liste der meistverkauften Jazzalben in Norwegen steht "At First Light" der Norwegerin Silje Nergaard an zweiter Stelle. Mit diesem, ihrem siebten Album hat sie bereits große Erfolge im übrigen Nordeuropa verzeichnet, so die stolzen Worte der norwegischen Botschaft. Nergaards Stimme klingt ebenso kindlich wie die von Lisa Ekdahl, und als wäre das noch nicht genug, hört man ein Baby als Begleitstimme! Aber ihre Gesangskompositionen sind ausgereift und sie ist in der Lage, eine ausgedehnte Melodie zu verfassen, die gut strukturiert ist, ohne in einer Zwangsjacke aus Reim und Kehrreim zu stecken. Obwohl Silje ihre Musik komponiert, ohne dabei mit dem Verfasser der Texte, Mike McGurk, zusammen zu sein, klingt das Ergebnis so organisch, als wären Texte und Musik in einer Partnerschaft entstanden. Tatsächlich ist es ist so, dass Silje die Natur des skandinavischen Jazz in der Notwendigkeit sieht, Melodien atmen zu lassen und dieses Empfinden von genügend Raum benötigt ihre Stimme auch, um besonders ausdrucksstark und individuell zu klingen.

“At First Light" is the second-best-selling jazz album of all time in Silje Nergaard's native Norway. With this (her seventh album), she's already made it big in the rest of Northern Europe, and in the proud words of the Norwegian Embassy. Silje's voice is as childlike as Lisa Ekdahl's, and as if that wasn't enough she has a baby on backing vocals! Her songwriting, though, is mature. She can write an expansive melody that's well structured but isn't straitjacketed by chorus and verse. Although Silje writes her music at a distance from lyricist Mike McGurk, the producer of their relationship sounds organic as if words and music developed together. In fact, Silje sees the nature of Scandinavian jazz in the need to try to let the melody breathe and it's this sense of space that her voice demands if it's to be at its most individual and expressive.
