As opposed to repeat listening to the same hits, listening to a band ideas when they're still at the embryonic stage is a much more illuminating path to treat. Post-punk pioneers Killing Joke's gloomy, dark rock inspired the likes of Metallica, Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails so getting closer to the process it a bit like a physicist getting to analyze the early universe. On one side there's the demo sessions, mixed by Steve Albini, where essential ideas of Killing Joke's sound were born. On the other, a excerpts from drummer Martin Atkin's very first show with the band at Burberries in Birmingham in 1988, just before he went to create the terrific Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions album with them. A thrillingly obscure retrospective from one of the all time greats.
