The group's definitive album, and one of the most daring debut albums ever recorded by anybody. At the time, it blew all of the progressive/psychedelic competition (the Moody Blues, the Nice, etc.) out of the running, although it was almost too good for the band's own good -- it took King Crimson nearly four years to come up with a record as strong or concise. Ian McDonald's Mellotron is the dominant instrument, along with his saxes and Fripp's guitar, making this a somewhat different-sounding record from everything else they ever did. And even though that Mellotron sound is muted and toned down compared to their concert work of the era (e.g., Epitaph), it is still fierce and overpowering, on an album highlighted by strong songwriting (most of it filled with dark and doom-laden visions), the strongest singing of Greg Lake's entire career, and Fripp's guitar playing that strangely mixed elegant classical, Hendrix-like rock explosions, and jazz noodling. Lineup changes commenced immediately upon the album's release, and Fripp would ultimately be the only survivor on later King Crimson records.

(REVIEW REPRINTED COURTESY OF BRUCE EDER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

An absolutely magnificent album that only seems to grow in stature with each listen. Robert Fripp & gang unwittingly created what is now a masterpiece for Prog Rock fans. The title track is both haunting and beautiful in its dynamics - moving from fragile acoustic ballad to almost orchestral grandeur. Fripp couldn't have picked a better vocalist than Greg Lake to sell these lyrics so passionately and with such wonderful tone. The more experimental moments during "Moonchild" are not meandering, but full of inspired spontaneity.

Such a stunning debut would prove challenging for King Crimson to match on later records. Although IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON follows this one nicely, it lacks that one remarkable song to elevate it to this level. IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING possesses two amazing songs in the title track & "21st Century Schizoid Man", with its stop/start time changes and wonderful brass and woodwind accompaniments. And if the stereo version isn't great enough, you should really make a point to hear the 5.1 mixes!

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY ROB DWYER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

This is a landmark album, a benchmark for all prog-rock bands to be inspired by in many different ways. There's everything from raw almost a punk chord attack in 21st Century to the classical feel of the reeds and flute combined with the innovative mellotron in Epitath. This album shows how different an album can be from one song to another and still feel like something organized and conceptualized. The entire package is truly a group effort with the lyrics, music and artwork. Few albums have had such a lasting impact on music. No matter what King Crimson did after this first album they will always live in the shadow of this masterpiece.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY ED HILGEMEIER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ►click here  for the complete album listing).

On an personal note: We are exceptionally proud to announce that this eBay seller has been credited by the Fripp Archives/Panegyric Records (UK) as a contributor on King Crimson’s 2009 5-CD Deluxe Edition 40th Anniversary Box Set  of this, truly legendary and groundbreaking album. The phenomenal box set features the original album mixed for 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters with Crimson founder Robert Fripp acting as executive producer. Disc One features five additional tracks drawn from the original recording sessions. Disc Two features the 2004 remaster of the original album plus bonus tracks. Disc Three features a complete album's worth of unreleased/alternate takes and instrumental mixes by Steven Wilson plus a de-clicked transfer of the original pink label Island pressing of the album. Disc Four features audio restored bootlegs of the band's legendary performances at Hyde Park, London in July 1969 and Fillmore East in November 1969. Disc Five is a bonus disc featuring a vinyl transfer of the ultra rare, U.S. radio promo only, mono album [our modest contribution is limited to this, fifth, CD], plus the equally rare US radio promo only single edit of 'Court of the Crimson King'. The DVD-Audio features a 5.1 DTS Mix and High Resolution Stereo mixes.  Thanks to Fripp and company's laborious efforts, this 40th anniversary edition sports sound as majestic as it has ever been within the digital domain. Frankly, the 5.1 surround sound even bests the warmth and timbre of an original 1-A vinyl pressing. This is especially critical during the quieter passages throughout "Moonchild" and "I Talk to the Wind.. The CD set is a must-have for any serious King Crimson collector and we urge all fans of Progressive music in general, and King Crimson in particular, to seek it before it inevitably goes out of print.  It has been our honor and privilege, indeed.
