However I have always been disappointed that none of their work matched up to the classic "In the Court of the Crimson King." On a whim, I decided to listen to Islands. I was not expecting much, considering it seems so overlooked and non-noteworthy by most people.I was greeted with progressive rock meets Jazz meets modern classical. A beautiful and subtle soundscape of traditional classical instruments and jazzy piano open the track "Formentera Lady." This ascends into a lush mixture including light guitar work and backing horns. One of the band's best openers.
Fripp's more heavy approach to the prog genre comes out in the second track, "Sailor's Tale." A catchy jazz rock section early on and fairly chaotic closer to the end. However, it also flows perfectly with the album, spicing it up and bringing it to the mid-section with short ambient outro.
"The Letters" is the most varied track on the album, Folk, Jazz, and Rock all cooperate and make this relatively shorter track a magical sound.
Lusty lyrics, loud horns, and harder guitar work come together in "Ladies of the Road." A highlight for some, a skipper for others.
Out of the blue (but not unexpected) comes "Prelude: Song of the Gulls." Some may call it a "cheap imitation of modern classical music." Me? I call it an excellent prelude to the final track "Islands."
The title track is perhaps the strongest. A 9 minute grand ballad of various instruments with a short unrelated outro sums it up well.
I believe Islands is a masterpiece that is ignored by most. But I could understand why many would find it boring or sub-par in comparison to In the Court of the Crimson King.
