Label/Format: Island – full island Pink i format with matt surfaces that have a very gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Beautiful labels with a gorgeous deep pink colour. Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks just on the lighter side of moderate. But all are fine and faint, and importantly, the record plays very well indeed. That never to be dismissed on a typically challenging King Crimson album.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, condition is a massive factor for record and cover – and equally pressing quality. This one pressed by Philips and this one of the cleanest all-round examples I have heard in some time.

Brief Artist & Album Info: After the astonishing groundbreaking magnificence of their debut album, how could this ever be followed up? – well the answer was to issue another similar album. It peaked at No 4 in the UK album charts and still remains as the band’s most successful in that respect. This one was not given the same adulation as the first by some critics of the day, that labelled it as another ‘In the Court of’. Sure, the formula has similarities, especially on side one – a loud first track, a quieter second, and an epic third, but all the songs are treasures in their own right. Side two does vary more: after the somewhat bizarre jazzy single ‘Cat Food’, that features brilliant piano work by Keith Tippet, it becomes immensely powerful and compelling, as ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ instrumental builds with ferocious intensity with heavy use of the magnificent Mellotron. This legendary keyboard instrument is blasted to it’s limits by Fripp with an intensity that was probably never matched. Unfairly underrated in my opinion, ‘Poseidon’ is simply another Crimson classic – it mixes calm relaxed songs with full-on chaos making it a hugely challenging set. Beautifully packaged also (apart from maybe the use of silver ink inside that is always hard to read). Cover surfaces vary – the very first issues were very heavily textured, the surface looking like a real oil painting. Subsequent versions were less deeply textured. Pressing quality was also variable, this one very impressively made by Philips and offering immense detail and power, without inherent pressing issues or noises. Cleanly pressed on high quality vinyl, this was a delight and pleasure to experience. Yes, a few very brief and mostly very faint ticks on the first track, but little else – a mere blemish being honest as so few will ever play often without major flaws. This copy with the very first printed cover and deepest texturing is impressive, but does have some edge and corner tip wear that few ever avoid to some extent. Given all the fact and fragility of this album, this vintage original has fared well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): but the main surfaces better still. An unlaminated gatefold format with deep complex texturing, this a first issue that includes the small reflection detail about three inches below the beaded necklace, this was omitted from subsequent pressings (and is NOT a rub). The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedrord. Includes the Polydor-style date-coded inner sleeve, this one from March 1970.

Cover Front: A genuine work-of-art that looks impressive. Incredibly prone to wear as to be expected with very deep and complex texturing of the outer surfaces. The front remains impressive with most of any rubbing on the corner tips, and only gentle rubbing on the folds. Minimal traces of speckle to the raised areas and creasing has been virtually avoided, as have any sticker issues. Colour and freshness is impressive with no fading. As stated the small white reflection detail is present only the very first printings and here is seen around 3 inches below the woman’s necklace. Often mistaken for a rub, but this is not the case, I have seen this in exactly the same position on several other originals. Later printings simply omitted it – this fact can be verified and checked on archive web sites.

Cover Back: Largely the same again, light speckle rubbing near the edges that is rarely avoided, especially on the back. The lack of ring wear is a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to really fault, both surfaces are clean and attractive.

Top Edges: Both flat, straight and flush with light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing on the front, lesser on the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both neat and still quite sharp with any thickening little and light. The record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal hint of any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely and parallel. The ends have rubbing, the bottom with most as-seen. Any other rubbing quite small and patchy. Most text is still present and strong with any letter clipping tiny and light.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with quite fine shape retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: I cannot emphasise enough how intolerant this cover is to poor or inadequate storage, lack of protection or heavy-handling. Many are found in a very poor or shabby states putting a fine early example like this into real perspective. With some edge rubbing, not for purists, but this first print example should will please many collectors and it could prove hard to find much better with an original record inside.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): aged by the usual paper discolouration, but no damage or other real wear. Two neat window circles, the lining still reasonably clear and intact. Minimal creasing and all edges naturally intact with no repairs. This is date-coded 1/0370 (March 1970), so manufactured a mere few weeks before the album’s issue.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy generally appearing carefully played with any surface marks mainly very light, some quite wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Viewed in average room light little even register. One tiny, super-fine mark on the first song emits a brief few, mostly very faint ticks. The only very small very brief blemish of note on my play-grade. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This progressive rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar those quite brief and mostly very gentle ticks towards the end of the first song. This offers very powerful, strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical progressive and King Crimson album with some very quiet, gentle passages – some almost silent – then quickly changing to ferocious chaos and volume. Massively challenging for vinyl and vintage equipment at the time of issue – so many trashed and written-off by heavy tracking, often still mono record players. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early first pressing significantly I feel sure. Yes the odd brief reminder of what is being played, but few can really hope to play ‘silent’ these days. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will could very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless perfection is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
