King Crimson reborn yet again -- the newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and Mellotron
The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup.
John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering (yet melodic) bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes.
Track Listing:
Side 1: Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part One / Book Of Saturday / Exiles
Side 2: Easy Money / The Talking Drum / Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part Two
LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO unwanted marks/writing and spindles evident when angled under a bright light
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its DEEP, GLOSSY SHEEN. The surfaces have some hairlines and a more prominent mark on Side Two (which can bee seen in the second LP photo) but this has little audio consequence (see detailed assessment below). Visually VG
VINYL Audio: SUPERB - CRYSTAL CLEAR, VERY SHARP and EXTREMELY STRONG. There are NO scratches, NO jumps, NO sticks, just a few clicks/pops and a little surface noise/crackle evident during some of its quieter sections - most pronounced on the quiet beginning of "The Talking Drum", but nothing I found at all intrusive on play-grading this MASTERPIECE. This LP has a HUGE dynamic range from the almost silent passages to the loudest crescendos and it is difficult to find an original copy which can cope with these heavy demands but this one plays throughout to a high standard and has NO groove-wear or distortion. Must be very critically graded as VERY GOOD for audio. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: The matte sleeve which is untreated and mostly white is incredibly prone to wear/marking and this one is in VERY GOOD+ condition. It is GOOD and SOLID with NO damage but it does have some ring wear and light marks to the back (please see photos). The spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) is straight and true with CLEAR text
INNER SLEEVE: The textured card inner is in BEAUTIFUL condition. There is a small tear to the opening top thumb notch (see photos) where it has caught on the sleeve on insertion but apart from this minor fault the inner is practically MINT - CLEAN, BRIGHT and FACTORY-FRESH with NO splits to any of the edges
OVERALL A VERY NICE ORIGINAL UK PRESSING
