He was tragically stabbed to death in 1971 at the early age of 37. One of his albums featured another great musician who died young, Duane Allman. That album is Instant Groove, which reached # 160 on the Billboard album charts in 1969

King Curtis will be forever known as one of the leading voices of the '60s soul renaissance and truly one of the more championed musicians during his short lifetime. Thanks to today’s respect and care given to his music by a whole new generation of musicians and fans, King Curtis forever reigns as one of soul’s pioneers. Much like Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and other superstars before him, Curtis Owsley (King Curtis) had the necessary ingredients of stellar musicianship and songwriting acumen which successfully reached across all gospel, soul, rock and pop genres.

King Curtis created some of his greatest sides ever for ATCO Records, where he spent his time on earth creating some of the most masterful and funkiest soul music ever waxed. In 1968, he was honored with his first greatest hits collection simply titled “The Best of King Curtis.” This stunning array of his most memorable hit singles and stellar album staples continues to illustrate how important a force he was then and still is today, over four decades since!

The Best of King Curtis features a heavy menu of his finest moments like the funk infused Harper Valley P.T.A. and Stevie Wonder’s I Was Made To Love Her”, the definitive balladry of Ben E. King’s Spanish Harlem, and of course his chart toppers “Ode To Billie Joe, Soul Serenade and a definitive tribute to his friend Otis Redding with (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay which truly opened up a worldwide audience to this sorely missed genius.

Thus, it was only natural that he should team up with the countrys #1 girl group, The Shirelles, themselves in the middle of an incredible run of chart-topping singles. This inspired pairing resulted in the Shirelles second LP release of 1962, The Shirelles and King Curtis Give a Twist Party.

And what a party it is! The albums eleven tracks mix scorching instrumentals with vocal numbers, never once stopping for air. Live At Fillmore West is the ultimate King Curtis live album, a brilliant confirmation of the saxophonist's place in popular music. This is the stuff of soul legends that belongs in any record collection.

The album showcases three concerts he played with his band The Kingpins at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco in March 1971. Those nights, the group supported soul singer Aretha Franklin, as were they her backing band. Famed for their outstanding rhythmic interplay, the group of seasoned session men featured a.o. Cornell Dupree on guitar, Billy Preston on electric organ and Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie on drums, supported by the inimitable Memphis Horns.

Curtis rips through some of the biggest hits of the day including Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love", transforming them into showcases for the group's soulful playing. Beautiful renditions of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "I Stand Accused" are highlights, and full-throttle rockers like "Changes" and "Memphis Soul Stew" comprise the heart of the album.

Tragically only a week after its release, Curtis was stabbed to death outside his brownstone apartment in New York following an argument with two junkies. The day after he died the album peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard 200 album chart, his greatest success as a solo artist.

 King Curtis Soul Meeting DMM 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION Import LP Original Album Featuring Nat Adderley & Wynton Kelly!

King Curtis was a dynamic tenor sax player whose work graced countless rock and roll and R&B records. Born Curtis Ousley in Fort Worth, Texas, his trademark was a honking Texas tenor sound inspired by his main influences Illinois Jacquet, Earl Bostic and Arnett Cobb, albeit with a rock and roll edge. He moved to New York in 1952 and played with Lionel Hampton's and Horace Silver's jazz groups. He began doing session work for R&B and rock and roll artists in the mid-Fifties. One of his most memorable solos, and the one that sealed his reputation as a rock and roll sideman, appeared in the Coasters' 1958 smash, "Yakety Yak". King Curtis can also be heard on such seminal early sides as "A Lover's Question" by Clyde McPhatter, "Boys" by the Shirelles and "Reminiscing" by Buddy Holly (which he co-wrote). As part of Atlantic Records' stable, he played on sessions for Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, Don Covay, Bobby Darin and others. In later years, he also produced (or co-produced) albums for Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Delaney and Bonnie, Freddy King and Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave).

Pursuing a career as a solo artist all the while, King Curtis recorded under his own name for the Prestige, Enjoy, Capitol and Atlantic labels. He cut such instrumental hits as "Soul Twist" (Number One R&B, Number Seventeen pop) and "Memphis Soul Stew" (Number Six R&B, Number Thirty-Three pop). In the late Sixties and early Seventies, he crossed paths with rock icons like Eric Clapton (who performed on King Curtis's "Teasin'" in 1970) and the Allman Brothers Band (who paid tribute to King Curtis by incorporating his "Soul Serenade" into their "You Don't Love Me" during a New York performance shortly after his death). King Curtis was revered by his fellow musicians, especially Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band (a fellow Atlantic Records sideman) and Robbie Robertson of The Band, who have cited him as a major influence.

Soul Meeting is the sixth album by King Curtis and was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. On Soul Meeting, King Curtis is accompanied by Nat Adderly (Cornet), Wynton Kelly, (Piano), Sam Jones (Bass) and Belton Evans (Drums). Nat and Wynton are supportive and offer up fine solos, and the rhythm section is solid, no matter which one is playing. "Soul Jazz" hadn't quite come on the scene yet, but King Curtis was laying a foundation down for it. Soul Meeting is said to be one of his best albums.

PLUS FOR THE COLLECTOR THE SOUL OF KING CURTIS Brand New Collection: 2 CDs / 38 Tracks Including the Best of His Solo and Session Work. 18-year-old Curtis Ousley arrived in New York in 1952, already in possession of some fearsome chops on his tenor saxophone. He’d wailed strong enough in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas to earn the regal stage moniker of King Curtis. A few years later, he’d replace Sam 'The Man' Taylor as New York’s first-call studio sax man, cutting loose with crystalline solos on countless R&B and rock and roll recordings. Curtis was versatile enough to blow straightahead jazz fare as well, maintaining two separate stylistic careers simultaneously for a time and excelling at both. Curtis recorded for a variety of labels during his career, including stints at Capitol and Atlantic, but what is arguably his finest session came for Bobby Robinson's Harlem-based label Enjoy Records in 1962. King Curtis never officially 'joined' Bobby Robinson's Enjoy label, rather, he came aboard only provisionally, willing to cut a couple of sides and see if they hit, and once they did, he would sign. Robinson ran the session for 'Soul Twist' and the record became Curtis' first hit. This album features the best of the Bobby Robinson sessions, and the best of his session work.
