Description
[THIS WEEK I am offering selected twelve-inch records. In my haste at selling the ten-inch ones, I utterly overlooked the fascinating world of the twelve-inchers. There is some exceedingly cool stuff here! Hope you like the change.]
ON December 11, 1936, a clearly emotional KING EDWARD VIII faced a BBC microphone at Windsor Castle, and formally ABDICATED HIS THRONE as King of England. This royal resignation was an unprecedented event, unique in British history. Edward was giving up his kingship, because "... I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility, and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love." The tale of Edward Windsor and Wallis Simpson is thus the romantic tale of a man who actually relinquished a throne for love.
Edward's speech was carried around the globe by short-wave, and heard everywhere. Numerous records were taken off the air; this one is more complete than others. It has Big Ben tolling, and the full, unexpurgated speech. Though at the time it was one of the most famous and oft-heard addresses, and carried the gravitas of a world-on-the-brink, it has largely receded from our collective memory.
This original 1936 un-numbered "Royal Recording" is in EE- condition; there's a little impact on the rim which does not impinge on the groove.

*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
