There's been plenty of promise around Kingfishr. The latest in a stream of quality indie bands to gain recognition far beyond their Irish homeland, Halcyon is great proof of concept: the debut album which tells us there's more than one trick to this particular pop pony.Across a generous 14 tracks the Limerick group rarely, if ever, falter. Rooted in fireside campout storytelling, their rich folk-rock sound feels authentic but unarguably polished. An ideal hybrid of modernity and tradition which, without coming across too cynical, should be enough to entice the two most audible music camps today at once contemporary and yet also old school. At their best when the notes are loud, nevertheless there's plenty to fall in love with at their quietest, too.
