Overview

Keep Your Courage is the first completely original album I’ve released in nine years. The songs contained within it were all written and recorded during the global pandemic that began in the winter of 2019 and is in its fifth wave as I write these acknowledgements in the autumn of 2022. It has been, and continues to be, a period of great flux and fear on every level: global, national, communal, familial, personal. Volumes have been and will be written about this cataclysmic series of events, all thrown into motion by an invisible nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat. But this is not an album about the coronavirus or the chaos it caused. For the most part, this is an album about the human heart, that throbbing organ in our chests that has come to represent not only our source of life but also of feeling.

There is a card in the Tarot, the Three of Swords, that is most often depicted by a human heart, pierced by three blades. Many people interpret it to mean great misfortune, loss, and injury in love. I prefer to see it as The Courageous Heart. The word “courage” has its root in the Latin word for heart, cor, and we see it over and over in many languages: le coeur, il cuore, o coração, el corazón. This is a song cycle that maps the journey of a courageous heart.

You will hear the word “love” no less than twenty-six times, if you listen start to finish. I offer an invocation to the Goddess of Love, eulogize a beloved sister and her kind, chastise and threaten my guardian angel for withholding its love and protection. I tell Echo’s side of the famous mythic story of self-love. I remember the Wrens of Curragh, fallen daughters, trading their loveless “barrack room favours.” I celebrate Walt Whitman with his boldly expansive love “above all causes, laws, and creeds.”

In these songs, passion is a wave of a raging sea or a fire to be burned in. Love is a battle to survive. My brave soldiers of the heart are defeated, retreating, trembling, drunk, blinded, cursed, enchanted, possessed, and bewitched. They have been plundered and pillaged, but all are still full of want and craving for sensation and human connection.
