Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP, a superb collector’s copy, from Telefunken (SLT 43049, German pressing, black/gold label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Joseph Keilberth and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra’s powerful and exhilirating accounts of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 36 and the Coriolan Overture Op. 62, both works recorded in the warm acoustics of the Kulturraum, Bamberg on 3 July 1958 and 6 July 1960, respectively.
The underrated Keilberth was a remarkable musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his transcendent 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. Hopefully, this will lead to further re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography. His Beethoven is revelatory, and comparisons with Karajan, Jochum, Bohm, Walter, Klemperer, et al. are not to Keilberth's disadvantage. The sound is superb.
Incidentally, the cover photo shows sculptor Caspar Clemens von Zumbush’s statue of Beethoven, commissioned by the Vienna “Friends of Music” and located at the Beethovenplatz, near that city’s Konzerthaus. There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German and English.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, light edgewear, a small sticker to the upper-left corner, and a tiny stray pen mark to the lower-right corner, but that is all. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and whole remains solid, bright, and glossy – a very striking and handsome collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT+. For the most part, playback rates a near-mint grading. However, near the close of Side 1, there is a tic and a slight bit of surface noise. There is also a very brief passage on Side 2 with surface noise. Otherwise, playback is truly superb and the sound outstanding. Nonetheless, if you must have flawless or near-MINT surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
