This handsome and rare LP from Japanese Telefunken (SR 5072, Japanese pressing, red/silver label, stereo, sample copy) features conductor Joseph Keilberth and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in outstanding performances of Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 in D Major “Clock” and Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 in C Major K. 551 “Jupiter”.

Both works were recorded in the warm acoustics of the Kulturraum, Bamburg, the former on 8 July 1957 and the latter on 19 July 1959.

The underrated Keilberth was a remarkable musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his stunning 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. One can only hope that more re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography will follow. His Haydn and Mozart are revelatory, and Telefunken’s engineering is truly superb.

Those not familiar with Japanese pressing would do well to investigate them. They often offer unique artwork or, as is the case here, a reproduction of the original label. The quality of the vinyl pressing itself is worthy of audiophile standards. Although this may not be the original late-1950s Telefunken LP, it undisputably delivers much smoother, and truer, sound.

There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Japanese only. The text (titles, etc.) on the actual LP, however, are in English. Incidentally, the striking cover photo is credited to Y. Baba.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Aside from very minor bumping at corners, the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attracitve – overall, a superb collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
