Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome and outstanding LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 163, French Pathe-Marconi pressing, red/silver label, stereo) features conductor Rudolf Kempe and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's famous "Concert à Vienne" album, a collection of orchestral bon bons that gives Sir Thomas Beecham a run for his money. Taped in the fabled acoustics of Vienna's Musikvereinssaal on 19/20 January 1958, these magical performances are imbued with an old world Viennese charm, as well as a brilliant orchestral panache that is quite simply breathtaking. If the Berliners seem to keep Kempe at arm's length, the VPO struck a warm rapport with their charismatic guest conductor. This is one of the great LPs of its kind.

Included are the following works:

Franz von Suppé: Overture "Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna" (Emanuel Brabec, cello soloist)

Richard Heuberger: Overture "Der Opernball"

Johann Strauss II: Overture "Die Fledermaus"

Franz Lehár: "Gold und Silber" Waltz Op. 75

Emil von Reznicek: Overture "Donna Diana"

Josef Strauss: "Sphärenklänge" Waltz Op. 235

Johann Strauss I: Radetzky March Op. 228

Incidentally, there are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in French only, by Jacques Slyper.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a discreet 1 cm seamsplit to the lower-right corner, as well as slight bumping at corners. There is also discoloration, particularly to the rear panel. However, there are no owners' markings, bends, or other seamsplits, and the jacket remains very solid, bright, and glossy – overall, a very good collector's copy.

Both sides of this disc have been carefully auditioned from beginning to end condition are graded conservatively as VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. There is occasional light surface noise, and perhaps a few soft tics (no repetitive tics). Those requiring a MINT or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere – overall, this is a very good collector's copy.
