"Make Up Your Mind / Gleam In Her Eye," by Ken Carol, released on Marmike in the U.S. in 196?. Dynamite rocker to the flip, written, arranged and produced by Mike Curb, the only release on his private label Marmike. More details were provided with a previous copy sold: "The Marmike label was owned by the famous ‘60s producer and writer of hundreds of records and songs: Mike Curb. Obviously the company didn’t do too well, or else it was a label merely set up to put this duo of Ken and Carol on. Both sides of the record were written by Mike Curb and the record was produced and arranged by Curb! Curb also owned the music publishing company, named Marmike Music. We know all about the actual record, but nothing about Ken and Carol! What were their full names? Where did they come from? What happened to them after this one release by them? Columbia Records obviously heard the record and liked it, since they bought it from Curb and issued it on their label in 1965. It went nowhere. Of course, Make Up Your Mind was the promoted side and listed on both the Columbia release and this Marmike release as the A side. Perhaps if they had pushed the flip side of the record they would have had a hit. Make Up Your Mind is a great song--a ballad--and attempts to have a Mamas & Papas type of sound, which was very popular at that time. However, Gleam in Her Eye is the killer and is the perfect song for collectors of those very hard-to-find wild rockers of the ‘60s--the types of songs that show up very rarely on record sellers’ lists. This song has a touch of Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” that’s gone crazy. It’s a wild, hot rocker with a super guitar break. The last 30 seconds or so break out in pandemonium, with wild screaming voices putting a hair-raising finishing touch on the song. How can I explain this maniac record?! It reminds me of Harvey & Doc’s Oh Baby on the Annette label--one of Phil Spector’s labels, incidentally. It reminds me of other songs that I’ve heard only once and longed to get my hands on, never finding out who recorded them. This record is one unto itself. It’s a lone killer in a sea of mediocrity."
