King Crimson Islands Original White Label Promo LP!
Cover---Solid, but not a perfect cover. All the seams, including the gatefold seams, are very strong and sturdy. However, the spine does have about four inches of cracked slick that does not translate into a split. Front and back covers are a little yellowed. A little bit of dirt on each, also. However, for those who know how easily these flat-textured covers can accumulate dirtwear, both sides of this cover show remarkably little to no dirtwear or ringwear. There is a light to moderate outdent to the back cover. The large, olive-green track listing sticker is present on the front cover in very good condition. There is also a price code sticker with the letter “E” on the front cover. The inside gatefold is in about the same condition as the front and back covers. A little yellowed, some light dirt and a very strong center seam. Name written on the left panel at the bottom.
Inner Sleeve---Promo’s were issued with generic white sleeves, so as not to waste the expense of the custom Atlantic inner sleeves. This one’s in good condition, with two center-split seams about an inch or two long. Easy enough to replace if you want to.
Vinyl---Not as nice as the Lizard promo also listed this week, this copy actually did get played. Under the bare bulb, both sides are covered with light scratches, none of which can be felt. A solid VG, this copy will also play VG. Lots of tics, but no pops, most of which will vanish, once the music gets started. Unfortunately, with quiet tracks like the title track, you’ll hear light crackle with the quiet passages. (I still think that sound is charming, myself…) Labels have the two prerequisites for Atlantic originals of that time: two concentric rings on the labels, as well as the 1841 Broadway address. Trail-offs both have STA plates, as well as the “PR” initials, both sides.
If the Lizard promo’s bidding gets too high for you, go for this one. Original Crimson promo’s are few and far between, and this one will make a very good first copy!
(Please note that due to time constraints, I have had to stop play-testing my vinyl. However, I am happy to by request. As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
