Here for sale is a highly rare and early copy of this seminal dub LP, featuring a genuine reggae superstar line-up, and NOT credited anywhere on the record sleeve to Augustus Pablo!
First released in 1976 in the US on Brad Osbourne’s Clocktower Records, the record sounded incredible but was later released in Jamaica with a highly inferior quality sleeve AND sound. On the Jamaican version, all the original US credits were simply pasted over, the name ‘Agustus Pablo’ pasted crudely on the front cover, and the words ‘Published by Pablo Music’ added to the back jacket.
In the UK, the legendary Liverpool soul/reggae DJ Roger Eagle – not liking the Jamaican version – decided to bring into the UK copies of the American LP: it came in a heavy duty black vinyl with a typical heavy card US sleeve AND it was shrink-wrapped! But it was the high quality sound that Roger Eagle wanted: being a stickler for sound reproduction, Eagle had often imported small runs of reggae and soul into the UK.
This particular LP was purchased new by singer/author Julian Cope, who immediately housed it in a thick clear polythene cover, wherein it has resided since 1977.
Please note that although this version is undated on both label and jacket, the style of the Clocktower label conforms with those used between 1972-77 – see Sister Stern, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, Slim Smith and K.C. White. Also, the label features the same telephone number for Brad’s Records as do other labels of the period 1972-77.
The disc itself remains in top condition. All the tracks have just been played through, and there is barely anything bad to report. Needle drop noise between each track is almost non-existent, and all tracks listed below are clean unless noted:
