ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP – amazingly, the LP is still sealed – from Italian Columbia (SAXQ 7340, Italian pressing, turquoise/silver label – ED1, stereo) features the legendary conductor Otto Klemperer in magically virbant and evocative accounts of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A Major Op. 90 "Italian" and Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D minor Op. 120, both taped at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London in February 1960 in warm, reverberant sound.
Wrote critic T.H. of the HMV Concerts Classics LP release of these performances (SXLP30178) in his review for the February 1975 issue of The Gramophone: "The first movement of the Italian is taken at a reasonable speed that allows the tune all its expansiveness and sweep—I do so dislike performances that take the music as fast as the woodwind can play their accompaniment; yet it has all the vivacity in the world. There is the most delicate soft playing, from woodwind as well as from the strings. The long final accelerando of the first movement (not noticed by many conductors) does start slightly suddenly; but it still is an exciting accelerando, right to the last bars. The second movement has beautifully affectionate phrasing over a relentlessly treading bass. The next movement is taken fairly swiftly and with a strong forward thrust, contrasting well with its predecessor, while the finale goes at a _ virtuoso speed, with absolutely brilliant playing, especially from the woodwind (only the very finest players could tongue it at this speed. But the main thing is that the whole performance is full of real distinction the original Philharmonia Orchestra and Klemperer were certainly a formidable combination.
"I could be equally enthusiastic about the Schumann but space forbids. If anyone thinks that Klemperer in his great days was an old slow-coach who would certainly not be the right man for the Italian, let him hear this performance."
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is some slight creasing, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and very attractive in appearance – overall, a lovely collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.
